We received 3 different titles: The Black Pearl, Saving Santa's Workshop, and What To Do About Frost? These books will be given to the children enrolled in our program so that they may enjoy them over and over again and add them to their home libraries. We are very appreciative of this great donation!!!

Director Visits Ladera Park

On Monday, June 30, 2008, the Director of The Bright Stars Reading Club and Enrichment Center, Mrs. Norwood, conducted an exciting read-aloud session with over 40 children enrolled in the Summer Program at Ladera Park in Los Angeles. She read Froggy Eats Out by Jonathan London. This book is from a series of books about Froggy who is a very funny and sometimes rude frog. In this story, Froggy is challenged with demonstrating proper behavior at a fancy restaurant that he attends with his parents who are celebrating their wedding anniversary. Mrs. Norwood engaged the campers ranging in age from 6-12 years, with props from the story such as, "spaghetti and flies" and
"Froggy" himself. She also chose some anxious volunteers to participate in some role-playing activities. After the story was read, some campers'  comprehension skills were tested when they were tossed the "story ball" to answer questions about the story. Some campers won pencils, a book from the series, Froggy Goes To School, and a Bright Stars Reading Club T-Shirt. As a follow-up activity, the campers made some very creative frog paper bag puppets with the great assistance of the camp workers.
The session was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Much thanks to Ms. Cammie, the Summer Camp Supervisor, for allowing us to spread and spark the love of reading among the children in our community. "After all, reading is the key to a child's success in school and in life."

The Director is available to conduct read-aloud sessions at Family Day Cares, Pre-Schools, Summer Programs, After-School Programs, Community Literacy Events, Public Libraries, Birthday Parties or anywhere that children gather. She may be contacted at (310) 673-READ.

Bright Stars Reading Club Celebrates
Its 4th Anniversary and Receives Accommodation
From City of Inglewood

4 Year Celebration

On Saturday, February 9, 2008 over 200 children and adults from the community attended the Bright Stars Reading Club's 4th Anniversary Celebration. This free community event was held at its Enrichment Center located at 714 East Manchester Blvd. in Inglewood from 12:30pm - 4:00pm.  The event began with a warm welcome and short history of the program by its Founder/CEO/Director, Mrs. Terri Norwood, along with the introduction and acknowledgement of Board Members and volunteers. Thereafter, the audience enjoyed fabulous storytelling by Griot "Mama Gee Tee", an exciting magic show performed by Perry Winkle, and an inspirational dance performance by the talented Miss Monik C. Jones of Creative Dance Movement. The children were happy to get their faces painted by Gigi the Clown.

The guests received notebooks, donated by Staples of Inglewood, in addition to other wonderful give-aways, won great raffle prizes of grammar games, puzzles, art supplies, gift cards, books, and luggage to name a few, enjoyed hot dogs, chips, popcorn, beverages, and cake.

The Bright Stars Reading Club was established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in October 2003. However, its first reading class was held on February 7, 2004 at Darby Park in Inglewood with an enrollment of 25 children along with a waiting list of 23 additional children.

The Director was extremely pleased with the outcome of the day's celebration. It is her hope that the community will spread the word to others about the Bright Stars Reading Club as it continues its mission to help 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade children develop and maintain a love and interest for reading in a fun and informal setting. She can not stress enough that "reading is the key to a child's success in school and in life."

On Tuesday, February 12, 2008, The Bright Stars Reading Club was also presented with a beautiful accommodation from the City of Inglewood by Councilman Danny Tabor of District 1. It was graciously accepted by the Founder/Director, Mrs. Terri Norwood
and it will be proudly displayed at the Bright Stars Reading Club and Enrichment Center.
